Power BI II: Fundamentals (English)

If you’ve already gained some experience with Power BI, we probably don’t need to get you excited. However, we can give your knowledge of data models and DAX a significant boost. This training will likely save you hours of Googling :-)!

Introduction

If you’ve created your first reports in Power BI, you might have heard of DAX. This is the formula language used in Power BI to analyze your data. We haven’t covered this language in our Power BI I Fundamentals training. However, it’s essential to master it. That’s why we’re going to delve into it in this training.

In this course, we’ll teach you step-by-step how to use the DAX language. You’ll learn all about the syntax, the different ways in which the language can be applied, and how to perform the most common calculations. We’ll also cover a few other topics. For example, we’ll teach you how to retrieve data from a database, all about geographical visualizations, and we’ll delve deeper into the Power BI Online environment. In that environment, we’ll show you how to work effectively with workspaces and apps. These are all essential components for successfully rolling out Power BI in your organization.

In one day you will learn:

  1. Working with databases and automating data set refreshes
  2. Your first steps in the DAX language
  3. Roll out Power BI in a manageable way in your organization

Topics

A full day of hands-on experience. You’ll discover how Power BI works step by step. We’ll practice extensively and use familiar examples.

  • Databases
In this training, we’ll work with an SQL database, as you’ll encounter it frequently. You’ll learn how to call an SQL database, explore it, and extract the correct data.
  • Refreshing Data Models
The essence of Power BI is setting up automated information provisioning. We’ll show you step by step how to automatically refresh data models.
  • Introduction to DAX
DAX stands for Data Analysis Expressions. It’s the programming language in Power BI that allows you to add analyses to your data model. This is incredibly important to master. You’ll learn all about the syntax and the difference between calculated columns and measures.
  • Date Functions in DAX
You’ll learn how to apply Time Intelligence in DAX using a date table. For example, you can show calculations relative to the previous year or month. We’ll write the date table in a single piece of code so you can easily reuse it later in your own environment.
  • Calculated Columns
You’ll use calculated columns to enrich your data with whatever you want. We’ll show you common applications and you’ll get started with IF, SWITCH, and text functions. All very practical and immediately applicable in your own environment.
  • Measurements
You can analyze your data with measures. For this, you need basic functions like SUM or COUNT. But you’ll also encounter more complex analyses where you want to add all kinds of conditions to an analysis. For this, we’ll teach you how to work with the CALCULATE function.
  • Geographical analyses
Always a great module! We’ll show you the possibilities of Power BI and you’ll build various geographical analyses yourself.
  • Workspaces and apps
A structured distribution of reports and datasets is crucial within your organization. We’ll explain exactly what the difference is between a workspace and an app and how to use it correctly.

And of course, the training is packed with practical tips and eye-openers. Afterward, you’ll receive a certificate and can be proud of what you’ve learned!

For whom

This course is for anyone who already has basic knowledge of Power BI and wants to take the next step. Structuring analyses using the DAX language requires a lot of structure. We’ll provide you with precisely that structure in this training. This will save you a lot of time later and keep your models manageable.

During the training, we’ll build a beautiful report step by step using the topics covered. This way, you won’t just learn individual components; you’ll leave with a truly impressive final result. And you can start building your first report right in your own work environment.
